What is a hairy stink bug?
The hairy stink bug Tinginotum perlatum Linnavuori, 1961 is widely distributed in western Japan. Its larvae are found on a wide range of plants, including Japanese laurel, Japanese juniper, and Ryukyu pine. Adults have been observed on maple flowers in the Kii Peninsula in early spring, and on Pittosporum tobira and Styrax flowers in the Yaeyama Islands (Yasunaga et al., 2001). In temperate regions, it has at least two generations per year, with adults overwintering. During winter, it can be found on ferns and weeds on the forest floor, as well as under fallen leaves on fallen trees. It is common on Ryukyu pine in the Southwest Islands, and is said to be present year-round in the Yaeyama Islands.
Distribution of the hairy stink bug
The specific distribution areas of this species are known to be Honshu, Izu (Hachijojima), Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima, Koshikijima (Shimokoshikijima), Amami (Amami Oshima), Okinawa (Okinawa Main Island), and Yaeyama (Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island) (Japanese Insect Catalog Editorial Committee, 2016), but there are no records of Yakushima. Furthermore, since there are no records in Yasunaga (1999), it is thought that it has not been recorded on Yakushima.
The author's record of the hairy stink bug.
On November 27, 2017, I photographed this species flying towards a light at an accommodation facility in Miyanoura, Yakushima Town, Kumage District, Kagoshima Prefecture, and I report my findings here.
1 ex., Miyanoura, Yakushima-cho, Kumage-gun, Kagoshima Prefecture, 27. 1/2017, photographed by the author (Figure 6).
Records of this phenomenon from lights can be found in works such as Yagi et al. (2003), and it seems to be a common occurrence.
