What is the large-scaled booklouse? What are the records of its distribution in Japan?

Stimulopalpus japonicus Enderlein, 1907 is a species of psocid that is commonly found around human dwellings, inhabiting rock surfaces and concrete block walls of houses (Yoshizawa, 1999). In Japan, as far as Johnson et al. (2020) and the author have confirmed, it has been recorded in Tokyo (Ito, 1977; Yoshizawa, 2000), Aichi Prefecture (Mano, 2018), Nara Prefecture (Nara Prefecture Red Data Book Revision Committee, 2017), Okayama Prefecture (Enderlein, 1907: this record is not included in the distribution record compilation of the Okayama Prefecture Wildlife Survey and Review Committee (2020)), Shikoku Prefecture unknown (Tomita and Haga, 1992), and Fukuoka Prefecture (Yoshizawa, 2016). The author has also recorded it in Hyogo Prefecture (Ikeda, in submission), but there is no description in Osaka Prefecture (2000), and it is thought that there are no records in Osaka Prefecture.

The author's record of the large-scaled booklouse.

I photographed this species at Takihata Tenjin Shrine (Daibontenno Shrine) in Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture, around 1:00 PM on August 26, 2016, and report my findings here (Figure 7).

1 example, Takihata Tenjin Shrine, Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture, 26. VIII. 2016, photographed by the author.

There are two species in this family (Japanese Insect Catalog Editorial Committee, 2016), but this specimen has a pair of pale yellowish-brown circular spots on its head, similar to those found in *Psocidae* (Ito, 1977; Yoshizawa, 2000). Because the specimen has grayish-white markings on a dark brown background, it was identified as this species. It was observed wandering around on the steps of a shrine.
