Distribution status of Okinawa white-legged worm in Japan
Elasmolomus squalidus (Gmelin, 1790) is distributed in Shikoku, Koshikijima (Shimokoshikijima), Osumi Islands (Kuchinoerabujima), Tokara Islands (Nakanoshima, Takarajima), Amami Islands (Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Yoronjima), Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Main Island, Kumejima), Kerama Islands (Zamami Island, Akajima, Kubajima), Miyako Islands (Miyakojima), Yaeyama Islands (Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island, Hateruma Island); Taiwan, southern China, the Oriental region, and tropical Africa (Ishikawa and Tomokuni, 2012; Ishikawa, 2016). It has also been recorded in Kuroshima, Kagoshima Prefecture (Nakamine et al., 2007), but there appear to be no known records of it in Yakushima.
A record of the author's time in Yakushima.
I photographed this species on the coast of Nagata, Yakushima, around 5 PM on November 28, 2017, and report it here.

The insect was observed wandering on the sandy beach. Vegetation included Rosa luciae f. glandulifera (Koidz.), Wollastonia dentata (H.Lév. et Vaniot), Viola mandshurica var. triangularis (Franch. et Sav.), and Vitex rotundifolia Lf. This species is known to be terrestrial and common on coastlines (Yasunaga et al., 1993), and this appears to be a similar case.
